DRC Inaugurates 10.5 MW Kakobola Hydropower Plant to Power 400,000 Residents and Boost Regional Development

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has taken another significant step in advancing its national electrification agenda with the official inauguration of the Kakobola Hydroelectric Power Plant in Gungu Territory, Kwilu Province.

The inauguration ceremony was held under the high patronage of the President of the Republic, Félix Tshisekedi, and attended by the Minister of Hydraulic Resources and Electricity, Aimé Sakombi Molendo.

With an installed capacity of 10.5 megawatts (MW), the Kakobola facility utilizes run-of-river hydroelectric technology, incorporating an integrated system for electricity generation, transmission, and distribution.

The power infrastructure connects key urban centers including Kikwit, Gungu, and Idiofa, while extending distribution networks to surrounding communities.

Substations and local grids will supply reliable electricity to households, public institutions, and commercial activities across the region.

The commissioning of the Kakobola plant is expected to provide electricity to more than 400,000 residents, creating new opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises, supporting local economic revitalization, and improving access to essential public services particularly in the healthcare and education sectors.

This milestone underscores the government’s ongoing commitment to positioning the energy sector as a critical driver of economic growth and social development.

It aligns with national priorities to expand electricity access and supports broader international objectives such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
